Acting as if you already posses a trait you want to develop is a powerful personal life coaching strategy that life coaches use to help their clients grow and break free from limiting beliefs.
When setting goals, it’s important to come up with a list of traits that breed success. You may already possess some of them, but you know that if you are going to be truly successful, you need to adopt the rest.
Here is a simple, practical life coaching tool that you can use to help you develop the traits you want. You can act as if you already possess them.
This is how it works. If you want to be more confident and outgoing instead of shy, act as if you already are confident. If you wish you could keep your work office cleaner, act as if you are the best organized person you know. If you want to have a more positive attitude, pretend that you are a more positive person.
Here are some tips that will help you take this idea further. You may also want to see a personal life coach, attend seminars, or read self-help books.
Do affirmations. Affirmations are another powerful tool. With each goal that you have or trait you want to adopt, create an affirmation that goes with it. Say each affirmation at least once a day, in the morning or night. The more you say them, though, the better. Devote your full attention to each affirmation to get the most out of the exercise. It also helps to look in the mirror as you say them. For example, of you would like to be more self confident, your affirmation will be “I am self confident”. There are plenty of resources that can give you more information on this.
Have a role model. If you want to be successful, one of the best things you can do is find a role model or two. It doesn’t have to be someone you know, just someone you admire. If you want to be confident, find a role model who you perceive is confident. If you want to have a great body, find someone who has a figure to strive for. While you are trying to change, you can use the role model to inspire you. When you are presented with new situations, ask yourself how your role model will act and adopt their behavior.
Visualize. Another technique you can adopt that will help you is to visualize yourself with the traits you desire. Visualizing is a form of acting and once you picture yourself doing certain things in your mind, it will translate to real life. Lie flat on your back in a darkened room. Relax all your muscles starting with your toes and working up. Then, picture yourself performing the tasks and adopting the traits that you want. Do this every day either in the morning or at night.
Act in real life. Some people are natural actors. Others need a push. If you are the type that can act well in real life, you probably don’t need to do the suggestions listed above. However, know that the suggestions could only have a positive impact so if you decide to do them anyway you may get successful quicker. When presented with a situation, assess whether or not you have the knowledge and confidence. If not, pretend that you do. This form of acting is one of your most powerful tools to accomplishment.
